Yet, though his pots--many inscribed with original verse--sit in museums across the nation, he is too often passed over when considering the early foundations of African American poetry. Born in South Carolina at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Drake produced hundreds of pieces while under the surveillance of the enslavers who claimed him and his work as their property. Still, asserts P. Gabrielle Foreman, he is perhaps the only Black person in all of the free or slave states whose literary work was preserved in neither books nor pamphlets nor newspapers. His pots and jars served as pages as well as ceramic vessels. This book examines how Drake's pottery and poetry have inspired visual artists and poets who claim him as an artistic ancestor. It features the Sir Dave (1998) series by artist Jonathan Green, including thirteen paintings that have never been exhibited or published together before. Accompanying and in dialogue with Green's paintings is a twenty-poem cycle called All My Relation (2015) by Glenis Redmond. Praise Songs includes the editor's interview of Redmond and Green and essays by Redmond, Foreman, and Lynnette Young Overby, the artistic director of a 2014 collaboration and performance featuring both Green's and Redmond's work. As one of the first volumes to focus on David Drake's legacy as a writer, it also includes an updated compilation of all of his poetic inscriptions. This volume presents the artistic legacy of one of the most well-known Black potters, and one of the most innovative and underappreciated enslaved poets, of the nineteenth century.

Condition: New

Item# 9780820362496

Authorized Dealer

Foreman, P. Her life was a true American fable--the story of an immigrant who came to the United States to start a new life for herself and her family and rose to the top of her profession. In Fanny Palmer: The Life and Works of a Currier & Ives Artist, Rubinstein chronicles the details of Palmer's life, situating her work as the product of her own merit rather than as an achievement of Currier & Ives, and portraying the artist as an enterprising professional and one of the most versatile and prolific lithographers of her day. Largely ignored by art historians because of her status as a graphic artist and as an employee of famous male publishers, Palmer's work was nonetheless a staple in nineteenth-century culture. Palmer was interested in recording all subjects that made up American life: her images of railroads, clipper ships, New York City, Civil War battle scenes, pictures of domestic bliss, and vistas of the newly opened West comprised at least two hundred of the company's signed prints. A long-time employee of Currier & Ives, she also collaborated anonymously with other staff artists, supplying landscape backgrounds and architectural elements to countless compositions. The first full-length biography of Palmer's life and work, as well as the first illustrated, annotated catalog of her drawings and prints, including a number of works that are new to the public and to scholars, Rubinstein's book shines a spotlight on this accomplished artist, arguing for her long overdue recognition as a pioneer in thehistory of women artists.

Condition: New

Item# 9780815610953

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/52a6a0a2-a162-5fb0-889e-156bc003eaba.jpg?v=1724602263
black-tights-wide-yom
Black Tights Wide Yom

Title: Black Tights Wide
Editor: Yom
Publisher: FAKKU
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 104
Dimensions: 11.57h x 8.11w x 0.39d
Product Weight: 1.15 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781634422918

Collecting 100 full-color pages and featuring 48 different Japanese manga and anime artists, Black Tights features some of the best illustrators in Japan. Author Sabra Moore vividly recounts life in this era of social upheaval in which women artists responded to war, racial tension and reconciliation, cultural and aesthetic inequality, and struggles for reproductive freedom. We learn intimately how she and fellow women artists found ways to create politically and personally effective art works, exhibitions, actions, and institutions.The book features Moore's involvement in pivotal art organizations of this time and her own development as an artist, counterbalanced with her connections to family in rural East Texas and friends in New Mexico. Moore was a member of the Heresies Collective, an influential feminist activist group, became editor of their art and politics journal Heresies, and was president of the NYC/Women's Caucus for Art. She helped coordinate and curate many of the earliest large-scale exhibitions of women artists in NYC, including Views by Women Artists (1982), and the collaborative shows Reconstruction Project and Connections Project/Conexus. Moore was a principle organizer of the 1984 demonstration against MoMA over their lack of inclusion of women artists and was a member of various groundbreaking collaborative arts groups in the 1970s, including Atlantic Gallery and WAR (Women Artists in Revolution).While Openings is an historical narrative of women artists' actions, organizations, and ideas, it also candidly describes their periods of challenge, including the death of sculptor Ana Mendieta and the indictment of her husband and the author's own attempted murder by her former art teacher.The book is illustrated throughout by a treasure of 950 color and black & white images of the art from this momentous period: a valuable collection that is concurrently being archived by Barnard College along with papers, letters, show cards, posters, original artworks, and other documents.This eye-opening book includes forewords by renowned art critic Lucy Lippard and poet/activist Margaret Randall.

Condition: New

Item# 9781613320181

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/92520ab2-f1cc-5afb-9800-0b578749b6ca.jpg?v=1724602282
introduction-to-art-design-context-and-meaning-lemieux-jeffery
Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning LeMieux, Jeffery

Title: Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning
Author: Sachant, Pamela J.
Publisher: University of North Georgia
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 300
Dimensions: 11.00h x 8.50w x 0.82d
Product Weight: 2.07 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781940771298

Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of Art. Tapia's works speak to the complexity of Latino/Hispano/Chicano identity, history, and contemporary culture, offering compelling insights and challenging perspectives on life in the barrio, on the border, and beyond. Rooted in a folk art tradition established in seventeenth-century New Mexico, Tapia's work at once honors its origins, reinterprets traditional subject matter, and revitalizes age-old techniques. As an artist and activist whose works have been internationally exhibited and collected, Tapia informs and educates non-Hispanic viewers about the Chicano and Nuevomexicano experience. At the same time, he transcends cultural and ethnic borders through the elegance of his craft and commentary. In this first publication devoted to Tapia's artistic legacy, leading art historians, curators, and literary figures consider Tapia's art both inside and outside the local and regional contexts in which it is made. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field and illustrated with many of the most impressive artifacts, it will be the authoritative book on the subject for years to come. The Anglo-Saxon period in England, roughly A.D. 400-1100, was a time of extraordinary and profound cultural transformation, culminating in a dramatic shift from a barbarian society to a recognizably medieval civilization. Settled by northern European tribal groupings of pagan and illiterate warriors and farmers in the fifth century, England had by the eleventh century acquired all the trappings of medieval statehood--a developed urban network and complex economy, a carefully regulated coinage, flourishing centers of religion and learning, a vigorous literary tradition, and a remarkable and highly influential artistic heritage that had significant impact far beyond England itself. This book traces the changing nature of that art, the different roles it played in culture, and the various ways it both reflected and influenced the context in which it was created. From its first manifestations in the metalwork and ceramics of the early settlers, Anglo-Saxon art displays certain inherent and highly distinctive stylistic and iconographic features. Despite the many new influences that were regularly absorbed and adapted by Anglo-Saxon artists and craftsmen, these characteristics continued to resonate through the centuries in the great manuscripts, ivories, metalwork, and sculpture of this inventive and creative culture. Anglo-Saxon Art--which features 150 color and black-and-white illustrations--is arranged thematically while following a broadly chronological sequence. An introduction highlights the character of Anglo-Saxon art, its leitmotifs, and its underlying continuities. Leslie Webster places this art firmly in its wider cultural and political context while also examining the significant conceptual relationship between the visual and literary art of the period.

Condition: New

Item# 9780801477669

Authorized Dealer

Title: Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts
Author: Syme, Patrick
Publisher: Art Meets Science
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 82
Dimensions: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.38d
Product Weight: 0.68 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781528717052

First published in 1814, this small volume comprises a collection of 110 swatches displaying nature's colour palette together with their poetical descriptions.In the 18th century, German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner set out to establish a standard reference guide to colour for use in the general sciences. The Instagram-friendly appeal of the portrait means that the modern version can be seen everywhere on social media as digital artists of all skill levels share their captivating characters, focusing on the face. This much-needed book for beginners to digital portraiture goes back to basics (simple anatomy, lighting, color, and perspective) as the starting point for even the most stylized of subjects. Professional artists with recognisable styles, including Loish, Simone Grunwald, and Francisco Garcés, still use these fundamentals. Readers learn from industry professionals how to infuse their subject with believable detail and atmospheric storytelling (especially relevant when working from photographs, as many artists do today). Experts demonstrate step-by-step their digital workflow, sharing techniques for rendering stylized skin tones, hair, and eyes. Sci-fi, fantasy, historical, and anthropomorphic portraits are created. Real-world individuals are highly stylized, yet convince the viewer. This is the essential guide for the next generation of portrait artists who want to create contemporary, stylized work that is compelling, emotive, and memorable.

Condition: New

Item# 9781912843398

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/335aaefe-c394-55ed-ad51-1d03298a09cd.jpg?v=1724602360
character-design-collection-heroines-an-inspirational-guide-to-designing-heroi
Character Design Collection: Heroines: An Inspirational Guide to Designing Heroi

Title: Character Design Collection: Heroines: An Inspirational Guide to Designing Heroines for Animation, Illustration & Video Games
Editor: Publishing 3dtotal
Publisher: 3dtotal Publishing
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 216
Dimensions: 8.00h x 9.90w x 0.50d
Product Weight: 1.7 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781912843268

New series Character Design Collection features 50 expert artists using professional techniques and approaches to create a library of inspiring sketches.

Condition: New

Item# 9781912843268

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/672d8996-4b0c-50be-a65d-e5aac25967df.jpg?v=1724602370
sisters-in-art-the-biography-of-margaret-esther-and-helen-bruton-good-wendy
Sisters in Art: The Biography of Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton Good, Wendy

Title: Sisters in Art: The Biography of Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton
Author: Good, Wendy Van Wyck
Publisher: West Margin Press
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 232
Dimensions: 9.30h x 7.30w x 0.90d
Product Weight: 2.15 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781513289519

With color photographs and artwork, Sisters in Art is the first biography to capture the lives and works of Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton, three exceptionally talented sisters whose mark on the California modernist art scene still impacts our world.Nominee, 2021 New Deal Book Award"Great stories abound in this book, including the goings-on of the 'Monterey Group' of painters and an encounter with a teetotaling Henri Matisse at a North Beach cocktail party. If California had a Belle Époque, this was it. From their chubby-cheeked 'Gibson Girl' childhood through their sunlit dotage, the Brutons were exemplars of many aspects of California history and, in recent years, overlooked. Good's book corrects this."--Library Journal"Both beautiful and substantial, Sisters in Art: The Biography of Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton. . . would make a great gift for the art lover in your life [...] The book contains detailed-but-lively accounts of the sisters' lives and work, and is filled with black-and-white and color plates of their art."--The Carmel Pine Cone"An illuminating and heroic work... [Good] writes vividly about how all three Brutons continued to make art until the very end of their lives."--Jasmin Darznik, New York Times-bestselling author of The Bohemians"For decades, Margaret, Esther and Helen Bruton have been relegated to a side note in California art history. Yet their work has found new appreciation in the 21st century, and their fascinating lives and impressive artistic achievements are finally coming back into the light."--Carmel MagazineEducated at art schools in New York and Paris, the Brutons ran in elite artistic circles and often found themselves in the company of luminaries including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Henri Matisse, Armin Hansen, Maynard Dixon, Imogen Cunningham, and Ansel Adams. Their contemporaries described the sisters as geniuses, for they were bold experimenters who excelled in a wide variety of mediums and styles, each eventually finding a specialization that expressed her best: Margaret turned to oil paintings, watercolors, and terrazzo tabletops; Esther became known for her murals, etchings, fashion illustrations, and decorative screens; and Helen lost herself in large-scale mosaics.Although celebrated for their achievements during the 1920s and 1930s, the Brutons cared little about fame, failing to promote themselves or their work. Over time, the "famous Bruton sisters" and their impressive art careers were nearly forgotten. Ziegler capture the metamorphosis that the city of Fort Worth, Texas, experienced in the early twentieth century. Ziegler (1881-1967) was a Texas Christian University art professor who never had to look far to find inspiration, producing images of Fort Worth in the 1920s and 1930s that provide a unique glimpse into the city a hundred years ago. Unlike his local contemporaries, Samuel P. Ziegler regarded Fort Worth's rapid urban development as an indispensable source of ideas. He expressed these ideas in paintings, drawings, etchings, and lithographs of significant buildings, street scenes, demolition and construction sites, and scenes along the Trinity River. Many of Ziegler's works from this period are presented here for the first time. Of special note are his depictions of the TCU campus, which grew along with the city. A professional musician as well as an artist, Ziegler taught music at TCU before eventually becoming head of the visual arts department. In addition to creating images of the city, in the late 1920s he began to depict the oil boom erupting in counties just west of Fort Worth. Ziegler absorbed all these sights and turned them into art, embodying the mindset of Texas artists living in the Depression era who believed in and pursued the regionalist ideal.

Condition: New

Item# 9780875658506

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/d450cc67-d71f-5672-b967-2abe1dc287de.jpg?v=1724602437
art-write-the-writing-guide-for-visual-artists
Art-Write: The Writing Guide for Visual Artists

Title: Art-Write: The Writing Guide for Visual Artists
Author: Amorose, Vicki Krohn
Publisher: Vicki Krohn Amorose
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 126
Dimensions: 8.40h x 5.40w x 0.50d
Product Weight: 0.35 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781937303129

This book has a single intention: To teach you how to write about your art. The result is the most comprehensive, informative, and visually rich story of contemporary art in North Carolina.

Condition: New

Item# 9781469661247

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/74f0201b-c1c5-5446-97c8-591f0e845dd7.jpg?v=1724602467
romare-bearden-in-the-homeland-of-his-imagination-an-artists-reckoning-with-th
Romare Bearden in the Homeland of His Imagination: An Artist's Reckoning with th

Title: Romare Bearden in the Homeland of His Imagination: An Artist's Reckoning with the South
Author: Gilmore, Glenda Elizabeth
Publisher: University of North Carolina Press
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 176
Dimensions: 10.10h x 7.20w x 0.70d
Product Weight: 1.45 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781469667867

Romare Bearden (1911-1988), one of the most prolific, original, and acclaimed American artists of the twentieth century, richly depicted scenes and figures rooted in the American South and the Black experience. Bearden hailed from North Carolina but was forced to relocate to the North when a white mob harassed his family in the 1910s. His family story is a compelling, complicated saga of Black middle-class achievement in the face of relentless waves of white supremacy. It is also a narrative of the generational trauma that slavery and racism inflicted over decades. But as Glenda Gilmore reveals in this trenchant reappraisal of Bearden's life and art, his work reveals his deep imagination, extensive training, and rich knowledge of art history.Gilmore explores four generations of Bearden's family and highlights his experiences in North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Harlem. She engages deeply with Bearden's art and considers it as an alternative archive that offers a unique perspective on the history, memory, and collective imagination of Black southerners who migrated to the North. In doing so, she revises and deepens our appreciation of Bearden's place in the artistic canon and our understanding of his relationship to southern, African American, and American cultural and social history.

Condition: New

Item# 9781469667867

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/13d0ed86-9e51-5748-b332-dcbcd4bc1365.jpg?v=1724602486
the-daily-zoo-goes-to-paris-ayers-chris
The Daily Zoo Goes to Paris Ayers, Chris

Title: The Daily Zoo Goes to Paris
Author: Ayers, Chris
Publisher: Design Studio Press
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 64
Dimensions: 8.30h x 8.30w x 0.60d
Product Weight: 0.9 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781933492797

Join Chris Ayers and his menagerie as they make their Parisian debut on the walls of Galerie Daniel Maghen. There were lines around the block."--Roberta Smith, The New York Times In December of 2006, an unlikely group of nearly 100 street artists from all over the world came together to participate in an art show celebrating Eleven Spring Street, long a premiere destination on the international Street Art map. The New York Times wrote, "One of the best shows of the season flamed past just before Christmas: a weekend long display of graffiti created by artists from around the world at, and in honor of, 11 Spring Street." The methodology was mixed media to the max: Wheat paste, paper, spray paint, house paint, markers, metal objects, found objects...the result was chaotic yet undeniably arresting. Marc and Sara Schiller of the Wooster Collective curated the three-day event, calling the show Wooster on Spring. It featured street art superstars like Shepard Fairey and Swoon as well as emergent talents including JR, Prune, and Doze Green.The result was a potent mix of artists who brought the street inside by re-claiming the walls for themselves, and a tipping point for what has become an international art world phenomenon. The three-day public viewing session was a landmark downtown event that drew crowds in the thousands, with people waiting up to five hours to get inside. With an Introduction by Shepard Fairey, an Afterword by JR, and an essay from Randy Kennedy of The New York Times, Eleven Spring captures an important moment in Street Art's history. All the works that were created for the show were subsequently covered up or destroyed by renovation. Eleven Spring allows these vibrant works to live again, ready for a new generation of admirers to enjoy and celebrate.

Condition: New

Item# 9780997653601

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/b386acc3-64d1-5db5-bf6c-07ec1c3ecd9a.jpg?v=1724602514
st-eom-in-the-land-of-pasaquan-the-life-and-times-and-art-of-eddie-owens-marti
St. Eom in the Land of Pasaquan: The Life and Times and Art of Eddie Owens Marti

Title: St. Eom in the Land of Pasaquan: The Life and Times and Art of Eddie Owens Martin
As Told by: Patterson, Tom
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 280
Dimensions: 9.25h x 8.69w x 0.90d
Product Weight: 2.34 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9780820352091

Self-taught Georgia artist Eddie Owens Martin (1908-86), known as St. EOM, created a visionary art site called Pasaquan in the mid-1950s in Marion County, Georgia. Covering seven acres, this evocative and fanciful site has captured the imaginations of thousands of visitors. Pasaquan includes six buildings connected by concrete walls, all of which are adorned with the artist's vibrant, psychedelic folk art of bold, transfixing patterns, spiritual and tribal imagery, and exuberant depictions of nature. According to St. EOM, his art arose from a vision he experienced in his mid-twenties, while suffering from a high fever. The first of many visionary experiences, it featured a godlike being who offered to be Martin's spiritual guide. Subsequent visions inspired him to begin making art and, eventually, to create a spiritual compound dedicated to a peaceful future for humankind. St. EOM enlarged his house to twice its original size by adding a long rear section covered inside and out with his rainbow-hued murals, mandalas, and relief sculptures. On the grounds he built a series of structures including a circular dance platform, some small temples, several totems, and a two-story pagoda, all in his wildly ornamental style. He also created more than two thousand freestanding pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and drawings. In the thirty years since St. EOM's death, the Pasaquan Preservation Society worked to preserve the compound, which had fallen into neglect. In 2014 the Kohler Foundation and Columbus State University partnered with the society to restore the visionary art site for future generations. With a full account of Kane's life as a working man, including his time as a steelworker, coal miner, street paver, and commercial painter in and around Pittsburgh in the early twentieth century, the authors explore how these occupations shaped his development as an artist and his breakthrough success in the modern art world. A rough-and-tumble blue-collar man prone to brawling and drinking, Kane also sought out beauty in the industrial world he inhabited. This Kane paradox--brawny and tough, sensitive and creative--was at the heart of much of the public's interest in Kane as a person. The allure of the Kane saga was heightened all the more by the fact that he did not achieve renown until he was at the age at which most people are retiring from their professions. Kane's dedication to painting resulted in a fascinating body of work that has ended up in some of America's most important museums and private collections. His dramatic life story demonstrates the courage, strength, and creativity of his generation of workmen. They may be long gone, but thanks to Kane they cannot be forgotten.

Condition: New

Item# 9780822947042

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/253d87bb-f26d-5f84-9b71-1d79eeff7ba3.jpg?v=1724602529
nuthin-but-mech-vol-3-wood-lorin
Nuthin' But Mech Vol. 3 Wood, Lorin

Title: Nuthin' But Mech Vol. 3
Editor: Wood, Lorin
Publisher: Design Studio Press
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 152
Dimensions: 11.00h x 8.50w x 0.60d
Product Weight: 1.15 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781624650277

Fifty-four artists contribute to this amazing third installment of the popular Nuthin' But Mech book series, based on the eponymous blog started by designer Lorin Wood in 2009 to create a place for his friends, colleagues, and acquaintances to share a common passion: robots. Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and dozens of other artists have braved difficult conditions to capture the splendors of Yellowstone in many media, from delicate watercolors and pen-and-ink sketches to powerful oils and popular lithographs. They have portrayed the animals that lived there, the humans who passed through, and above all the remarkable features that have made Yellowstone a wonderland to so many artists and observers. From the moment of its inception in 1872 as the first national park in the world, Yellowstone National Park has been perceived as a vast visual spectacle. By the 1890s it was known as "the Nation's Art Gallery." Peter H. Hassrick traces the artistic history of the park from its earliest explorers to the present day in this new edition of Drawn to Yellowstone, a richly illustrated account of the artists who traveled to and were inspired by Yellowstone. Yellowstone is simultaneously an aesthetic experience and a potent force in America's search for national identity. Visitors made comparisons between the castles of Europe and the gleaming spires of Yellowstone to prove that America, too, had its history and its grandeur. Like the waters pulsing from its geysers, from Yellowstone flows an artistic energy that at once captivates a nation and contributes to its philosophical and aesthetic history.

Condition: New

Item# 9780989640541

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/1118f304-b433-5361-ae24-c7739901de68.jpg?v=1724602548
pen-and-ink-drawing-a-simple-guide
Pen and Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide

Title: Pen and Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide
Author: Dunn, Alphonso
Publisher: Three Minds Press
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 168
Dimensions: 10.90h x 8.40w x 0.50d
Product Weight: 0.9 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9780997046533

Pen & Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide covers the essential aspects of pen and ink drawing and more. Art has always been one of the most vivid ways to express people's imagination. Fantasy art illustrates the full range of human fears and dreams, from mythology, the Bible, and the artist's own original and exciting stories.This book describes the history of fantasy art from Romanticism in the 18th century to the modern era by exploring the masterpieces of fantasy artists: William Blake, John Martin, Albert Robida, Jules Gabriel Verne, H.G. Welles, and more. It also shows illustrations from science fiction and fantasy novels such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, poems and stories by Edgar Allan Poe, mystery novels by Agatha Christie, and contemporary fantasy novelists such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Michael Ende.This book illustrates the remarkable transition of fantasy art that occurred in 19th century when steampunk was introduced to the fantasy art world. Steampunk was unique because it was a fantasy-based style that was inspired by a real event, the Industrial Revolution. Today, the influence of steampunk can be seen in everywhere, from legendary films by Walt Disney and Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. Installed at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971, the exhibition presented traditional American pieced quilts on walls more commonly used to display modern art such as abstract expressionist paintings. The exhibition, curated by Jonathan Holstein and Gail van der Hoof from their own collection, unexpectedly struck a chord with museumgoers and art critics alike, breaking attendance records and subsequently traveling to museums across the United States, Europe, and Japan. With Abstract Design in American Quilts at 50, an exhibition series that includes an installation of the original quilt group, the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln reexamines the half-century impact of this watershed exhibition. In five essays, leading quilt scholars assess the areas upon which the exhibition, in its various iterations, had its greatest impact, most notably the growth of quiltmaking across the United States and in art circles. The essays also discuss broader cultural phenomena that produced an environment in which quilts and other forms of material culture could be viewed and valued in new ways.

Condition: New

Item# 9781735278421

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/b80a01b0-a79b-5b99-a2b1-e738622666b2_b1c12ba0-54b1-4854-aa63-22dab8752c55.png?v=1724602596
final-fantasy-xiv-endwalker-the-art-of-resurrection-beyond-the-veil
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker -- The Art of Resurrection -Beyond the Veil-

Title: Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker -- The Art of Resurrection -Beyond the Veil-
Author: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix Books
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 336
Dimensions: 11.66h x 8.35w x 1.06d
Product Weight: 3.56 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781646092345

The second volume of a two-volume set of the official art books for the global hit game Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, featuring hundreds of pages of full-color art and an exclusive item code! Drawing on an expansive and largely unpublished set of objects, images, and documents, Cecile Fromont examines the advent of Kongo Christian visual culture and traces its development across four centuries marked by war, the Atlantic slave trade, and, finally, the rise of nineteenth-century European colonialism. By offering an extensive analysis of the religious, political, and artistic innovations through which the Kongo embraced Christianity, Fromont approaches the country's conversion as a dynamic process that unfolded across centuries. The African kingdom's elite independently and gradually intertwined old and new, local and foreign religious thought, political concepts, and visual forms to mold a novel and constantly evolving Kongo Christian worldview. Fromont sheds light on the cross-cultural exchanges between Africa, Europe, and Latin America that shaped the early modern world, and she outlines the religious, artistic, and social background of the countless men and women displaced by the slave trade from central Africa to all corners of the Atlantic world.

Condition: New

Item# 9781469641249

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/c3a58e51-20b3-5e83-9c24-a89da0208737.jpg?v=1724602728
pen-and-ink-drawing-workbook
Pen and Ink Drawing Workbook

Title: Pen and Ink Drawing Workbook
Author: Dunn, Alphonso a.
Publisher: Three Minds Press
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 142
Dimensions: 11.00h x 8.50w x 0.30d
Product Weight: 0.76 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9780997046502

PEN AND INK DRAWING WORKBOOK is perfect for anyone looking for a book that provides lots of practice for developing and refining ink drawing skills and technique. The township of Papunya was founded in 1959 as a settlement for Aboriginal people who were relocated from their homelands. Living in cramped conditions, the community brought together people of diverse backgrounds and languages. Painting offered a way of asserting authority: of explaining who the townspeople were and where they came from amid this chaotic mélange of strangers. Using ancient iconographies rarely seen by outsiders, an artistic renaissance sprang forth as artists defiantly asserted themselves against the uncertainty of colonial displacement.Irrititja Kuwarri Tjungu (Past and Present Together) celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Papunya Tula Artists, from the very first experiments on scraps of cardboard, linoleum, and Masonite through to the epic abstract paintings that are showcased internationally today. Motivated by the artists' desire to preserve and transmit their cultural knowledge, the movement quickly grew into a powerful medium for economic and social justice. From humble beginnings, a multimillion-dollar industry would emerge, changing the face of contemporary art and creating a powerful voice for Indigenous artists.Contributors: John Kean, Steve Martin, Fred Myers, Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra, Narlie Nelson Nakamarra, Eileen Napaltjarri, Charlotte Phillipus Napurrula, Jodie Napurrula, Punata Stockman Nungurrayi, Rachel Paltridge, Hetti Perkins, Cara Pinchbeck, Henry Skerritt, Margo Smith, Marina Strocchi, Paul Sweeney, Morris Jackson Tjampitjinpa, Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri, Bobby West TjupurrulaDistributed for the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia

Condition: New

Item# 9781735326924

Authorized Dealer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0128/7762/7456/files/0e990f3f-f68c-5261-b321-1802df2e1759.jpg?v=1724602862
reflections-the-art-of-robert-gratiot-gratiot-robert
Reflections: The Art of Robert Gratiot Gratiot, Robert

Title: Reflections: The Art of Robert Gratiot
Author: Gratiot, Robert
Publisher: SF Design, LLC / Frescobooks
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 108
Dimensions: 10.90h x 10.90w x 0.40d
Product Weight: 1.7 lbs.
Language: English
ISBN: 9781934491614

Artist Robert Gratiot refers to his work as "painterly photo-realism," and he readily reveals his complete commitment to this reference by rendering his subjects with photographic accuracy. His mastery of painterly methods and of various drawing techniques highlights his astounding eye-to-hand coordination. Gratiot precisely conveys a particular scene through meticulously produced details, each down to the smallest and expertly handled. But it is more than that--he regards each small section of a painting as an abstraction, and then assembles these tiny abstractions to build the realistic whole.
